Mobile Device Zero Usage Management: Keeping costs (and stress) under control

november 30, 2017, Mobile Expense Management

Many organizations today are unaware that they are spending a sizable portion of their budget on mobile devices that have absolutely zero usage. In fact, according to research by Forrester and Cisco, it’s estimated that nearly 20% of corporate-owned devices may go unused — that’s roughly one out of every five devices. With the global mobile workforce expected to reach 1.75 billion in 2020, managing mobility is only going to get more complex.  A few dollars here and there may not seem like a lot, but if you’re a large enterprise with thousands of employees and multiple locations around the globe, those costs can quickly add up.

Without the proper tools, it can be easy to lose sight of what you have and what you’re paying for. To help put things into perspective (and for simplicity purposes), let’s say your organization has 1,000 mobile devices at a single location and 200 of them have zero usage. Assuming an average monthly cost of $65 per line, you’re easily spending $13,000 per month and over a 3-month period, this equates to $39,000. To take this a step further, imagine if you had 5 locations with 1,000 devices each and applied the same math, you can see how wireless spend can quickly spiral out of control.

Understanding The Who, What and Where

Knowing who has these devices, where they are located and if they are still needed are all critical first steps to gaining control and visibility over your wireless usage and spend. A device may have zero activity for a variety of reasons.  Employees come and go. Systems don’t get updated. The device gets reassigned without a manager’s knowledge or tossed into a drawer and forgotten about. Or perhaps it’s reserved for special use. Regardless of the reason, one thing is for sure, carrier(s) will continue to bill you for these so-called ‘zombie’ devices — even if they remain unused.  Add increased data usage, varying rate plans and device options to the mix, managing mobility can get messy.
