Selecting the right Managed Mobility Services (MMS) solution for your company’s needs can be tricky.

MMS is relatively new and is a rapidly evolving set of technologies and services. Administrators are often surprised to discover the variety of functions available in current MMS solutions, which typically include mobile device management (MDM), mobile email management (MEM), mobile application management (MAM), mobile content management (MCM). MMS vendors continue to offer new features in response to feedback from their customer base. As there are very few industry standards for MMS, some companies are delaying decisions regarding deployment without a clear and obvious need for these features.

Here are a few tips to help in selecting an MMS provider:

Start with your mobile requirements: The basic questions of size, scope, and scale of your mobility deployment will start the process. Discovering of applications that are currently being utilized by your work fleet and access to data (Wi-Fi and cellular) requirements need answers. Be certain to consider management, budgets, device support and security before any discussion of possible vendors takes place. MCM and the containerization of sensitive corporate data should take center stage in almost every MMS strategy.

Shop around: Once you understand your MMS requirements, compare the offerings of each provider. MMS products can range from do-it-all suites to specialized products with specific functions. It may be better to forgo certain aspects of functionality than to support products and features that overlap and even conflict in some cases. Most MMS providers will offer a short trial period of their solution or suite for you to test their product. It’s a good idea to “test drive” multiple MMS solutions before choosing a solution.

Consider integration with other IT management systems: Minimize cost and maximize IT staff productivity by integrating your MMS solution with your management systems, directory services, document collaboration produces, and related capabilities. Mobility and cloud services take center stage in corporate strategies today; support for older legacy systems will still be important for at least the next few years. Thinking through your overall mobility and IT management philosophy and establishing a path to an integrated strategy are essential before deciding on an MMS solution.

The mergers and acquisitions currently taking place in the MMS provider space make product selection tricky. Will the vendor be around for the life cycle of their product? How will pricing and support be affected? And how will a given vendor integrate future offerings into more comprehensive products and services? Careful consideration of these issues will help you choose a solution that is more of a treat than a trick for your organization.
