Using your personal mobile device at home and work has never been better. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programs have made great strides over the last few years. Mobile OS’s, EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management) providers, and mobile applications have delivered. Rightly so, the focus is on the overall employee experience, enablement, security, and personal privacy.
Is this all there is to build a successful BYOD program? The simple answer is no, but it is a great start and “crushes” all of the prerequisites. On top of the great employee experience, companies must tick all the checkboxes in the board room too. I will delve into what it takes to create a BYOD program employees and employers consider a smashing success.
Let’s start with users or the employees. First of all, thank you iOS and Android (Enterprise). You have properly embedded tools (i.e. APIs) for all to use, mostly EMMs. To use a farming analogy. The mobile platforms have created a soil-rich environment and the EMMs have planted the bountiful fruits and vegetables. Can you grow fruits and vegetables without great soil? Yes, but it takes a lot more work from the entire community.
The first hurdle to any program is adoption or on-boarding. In the case of EMMs, that means enrollment and it is simple. Simply download the EMM application, your company information, and enter your credentials or registration details. You can even scan a QR code to make it even easier.
After enrolling, employees and employers are protected and enabled. There is now a separation of work and personal data. From the employee perspective, you can rest assured that your privacy is respected and the company does not have access to personal data like pictures or app data and cannot take invasive measures like wiping your entire phone or resetting the device password.
On the work or company side, corporate data and applications are secured. The employee only has access to the corporate-approved public applications or private applications. Everything is in place to allow your workforce to thrive. Corporate policies or profiles are deployed to the work side. In the event of loss or stolen devices, employers can take proper measures to protect the corporate data.
We can’t be so quick to call the entire BYOD program a success and call it a day. There are other aspects of your program that need to be flushed out.
Cost is often the impetus for implementing a BYOD program. Companies usually only consider the device cost to measure success. Nothing is free. BYOD broadly enables companies to leverage mobility to more employees. And with this, there is an offset to some of the savings.
Almost everything is going to the cloud and mobility is a primary driver. Everyone wants their data and applications wherever and whenever. This will increase cloud and associated costs. Additionally, there will be an increase of EMM license, hardware/infrastructure, application license, and support costs.
