If you’ve been in IT since the mainframe days, the accelerating pace of change we’re experiencing may make your head spin. IT is currently managing the impact and implications of cloud, IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the impending ubiquitous, ultra-high speed access capabilities of 5G. Technology is absolutely transforming the way we do business and it’s only going to get more complex – all while providing measurable benefits as well as inflicting possible financial hardships and consequences to business operations.

Managing the Impact of IoT, AI and 5G

As enterprise leaders consider the potential value IoT, AI and 5G can offer their organizations, they also struggle with the realities of impending operational challenges around security, costs, risks, organizational acceptance and defining ROI. Preparing for the impact of disruptive technologies and the potential adverse effects can be overwhelming. However, the repercussions of not acting can be far greater.

IT organizations need strategies to address these trends:

  • The consumerization of new technologies allows seamless procurement of cloud-enabled services that can covertly operate within the realm of “Shadow IT”.
  • Ubiquitous access to network services will usher a rise in virtual workforces. Consumption-based services will require continuous monitoring to ensure they are maximizing their investment.
  • Management will rely more on their “digital worker’s profile” to identify potential issues and find ways to provide performance coaching.
  • Massive quantities of IoT-based transactions will involve machine-to-machine (M2M) with absolutely no human interaction.
  • M2M communications will need to be analyzed to make proactive adjustments.
  • Robotic advancements known as “cobots” will offer new opportunities for performance improvements by becoming extensions of humans.
  • AI will offer knowledge workers omnipresent natural language collaboration with advanced knowledge systems to speed and improve problem solving.

Seizing the opportunity

ICT managers have the opportunity to study these technologies in their infancy, before they become mainstream deployments across their organization. Technology is no longer a top-down deployment, but rather, it’s about enabling the user. It is more important than ever to build solid customer relations to better understand their business activities and challenges so you’re ready to address them when the time comes. Essentially, this new role of IT is evolving from a ‘technology expert’ into a ‘trusted technology broker‘ in advising its organization on the best use of technologies to achieve their objectives.

The bottom line is that if you’re not thinking about the implications of IoT deployments and other technologies within your organization, you should be. These technologies will dwarf the previous eras of disruptive change. Organizations need to start formulating a short term and long-term business strategy to address what is just ahead.
